All About Watermelons
Have you ever wondered why it’s called a watermelon? Watermelons are 6% sugar and 92% water! They also have lots of healthy vitamins, like B6, vitamin A, and potassium. There are over 1200 types of watermelons! Some are red, but others can be orange, yellow, or white. They have different names like Moon and Stars, Cream of Saskatchewan, and Sugar Baby. The heaviest watermelon ever recorded was over 350 pounds. The most expensive type of watermelon is called the Densuke. They are only grown on the island of Hokkaido in Japan and are carefully taken care of as they grow. Local farmers sell them for up to $300 at roadside stands, but the best of the best go to auctions where they have been known to sell for over $6,000! Did you know, wild watermelons are native to southern Africa? However, the world’s largest producer of watermelons nowadays is China. In 2021, China produced over 67 million tons of watermelon!
